Diamond jewellery in India usually comes in 14Kt or 18Kt gold – not the 22Kt used for plain gold jewellery. Here's why, and how to pick the right one.
Why not 22Kt for diamonds?
22Kt gold is soft. Diamonds are held by tiny metal claws (prongs), and soft gold can bend, letting a stone loosen or fall out. 14Kt and 18Kt are mixed with stronger metals, so they hold diamonds securely.
The difference at a glance
| 14Kt | 18Kt | |
| Pure gold | 58.5% | 75% |
| Colour | Slightly lighter | Richer, warmer |
| Strength | Harder, more scratch-resistant | Strong, slightly softer |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Exchange value | Lower (less gold) | Higher (more gold) |

Does karat change the diamond?
No. The diamonds are the same quality either way. At Tattvaa all pieces use E-F colour, VVS clarity natural diamonds. Only the gold changes.
Our recommendation
For daily-wear nose pins, studs and light earrings, either works well. For rings and bridal jewellery, 18Kt is the classic choice. Still unsure? Visit our R.S. Puram studio in Coimbatore and compare both side by side, or WhatsApp +91 95909 36673.
Every Tattvaa piece is BIS-hallmarked, with free shipping across India and a 30-day exchange.
